The Essential Role of Hotsticks and Disconnect Tools

Safety remains the top priority when it comes to electrical work. For decades, electricians have relied on specialized tools to ensure safety while working on live line power and energized equipment. Among these indispensable tools are disconnect sticks, also known as electrical disconnect sticks. These have been essential since the early 1900s, and now, with modern technology and effective fiberglass design, they are more efficient and safer than ever.

Evolution of Safety with Disconnect Hotsticks

Disconnect sticks have evolved just like many other advancements in electrical PPE. They were originally crafted from wood, being rudimentary yet effective. As technology progressed and safety standards became more stringent, the need for more robust materials led to the adoption of fiberglass-reinforced thermoset resins.

Today, these insulated hotsticks are manufactured to meet or exceed ASTM F711 safety standards. ASTM F711 requires the hotstick to be tested at 100kV every 12” or 50kV every 6” to ensure the tool provides exceptional shock protection. It is a pass/fail test, and a hotstick MUST pass this test before it can be distributed for use.

They provide a crucial barrier between workers and shock hazards in the field. With these new technologies and more stringent testing requirements, workers can rest assured knowing they are as protected as ever when using our products.

Versatility and Functionality

High voltage hotsticks are needed for operating overhead and underground apparatus, including cutouts and switches. Disconnect tools feature components that are specifically designed to attach/maneuver the operating ring of cutouts and switches so that maintenance can be performed on this equipment from a safe distance. We offer a range of options to cater to diverse environments & needs.

The Disconnect stick comes with a fixed disconnect head at the end of a hotstick. We also offer a universal hotstick that features a head with universal ‘teeth’ allowing for attachment of a wide variety of disconnect tools with different shapes and configurations to provide added utility based on the preference of the user and the environments they are working in. Whatever the situation, we have a solution!

Commitment to Safety

Rauckman Utility Products, a subsidiary of NSA/Enespro, manufactures these products and shares our commitment to prioritizing safety above all else. Our hotsticks are deliberately engineered with closed-cell foam-filled fiberglass handles to ensure ergonomic comfort and maximum insulation. By utilizing premium materials and adhering to stringent safety standards, our hotsticks provide peace of mind to electrical workers operating in challenging environments.
